Generation One

0. John1 McPhail was born in 1784 at North Doll, SCT.1 He married Marion McKellar on 5 Aug 1810 at Lochgoilhead, Argyllshire, SCT.1 He died on 19 Apr 1868 at Iva, Anderson County, SC. He was buried in Apr 1868 at Old Chapel Methodist Church, Starr, SC, near George and Mary Hayes house in the Flat Rock Community.

He McPhail's are from Highland Clan Cameron. They had three children before coming to the United States; Peter, Sibbia, and Marionetta. They sailed from Greenock, Scotland on a 90 day voyage to Charleston Harbor. Their daughter Marionetta died on the ship and was buried at sea. Aunt Marion McPhail named for Marion McKellar.

They first went to Barnwell, then to Anderson County. James, Amanda, Jane, and John were born in South Carolina.

They are buried in the old Chapel Methodist Church, near Starr, SC, near George and Mary Hayes of the Flat Rock Community.

He emigrated circa 1815 from Argyllshire, SCT.

He was Methodist minister, but owned considerable property and was also probably a blacksmith in 1850 at Anderson County, SC.1,2 He Had 10 slaves, all named in his will. Anderson County will, dated 1 Feb 1864, is printed in Marion Hart's book. His will also lists all personal possessions. Total sum of all assets, including land was $64,600.

They adopted a german boy, George Schrimpf.

John and Mary Lewis (Anderson) Richardson were married by the Rev S. H. Browne. The marriage announcement was listed in the Southern Christian Advocate, 2 Feb 1849.

There is a John McPhail - listed as Company F, 24th Inf Reg, died in service of disease 1863? Who?1

Generation Two

1. Peter2 McPhail (John1) was buried at Sandy Springs Methodist, SC. He was born on 1 May 1812 at Greenock, Argyllshire, SCT. He married Malvina A. Richardson, daughter of Turner Richardson and Mary Lewis Anderson, on 13 Aug 1840 at Laurens, SC. He married Permelia Anne Lewis, daughter of Jesse P. Lewis, on 6 Apr 1858. He died on 22 Sep 1893 at Sandy Springs, SC, at age 81.

He emigrated; 1815.1 He Peter's first wife was Malvina A. Richardson, daughter of Mary Lewis (Anderson) Richardson. (Mary Lewis later married John McPhail,Jr). Peter had 7 children with Malvina and none with Pernelia Ann Lewis.

Peter and Anna were mentioned extensively in 'Pendleton District and Anderson County Wills, Estates, Inventories, Tax Returns, and Census Records' (Alexander, Elliot, Willier, 1980). For ex. Mentioned in Estate Sale of Kindred Massey 5 Dec1843, as 'took' Caroline (bought slave?).

Also, Anna and Peter mentioned in will of Jesse Lewis dated 21 Sep1860, probated 2 Sep1867. This will mentions land called the 'Pope Tract' bounded by land of Peter McPhail. Also mentions the children and Anna McPhail.

He was known also as 'Captain Peter' with the reason unknown. This was referred to in his daughter's marriage announcement in the Anderson Gazette (25 Feb 1869, From Marion Hart's book), 'Peter was a successful landowner, living in the Varennes community.....later moving to the Sandy Springs area. ... he was first a Presbyterian, then changing to Methodist..... He did not serve in the War Between the States, due to his age.

Donald McPhail, of Anderson (great-grandson of Peter) has the Peter McPhail family bible, plus civil war letters from James Wentworth McPhail. (Copy of letter text in Marion Hart's book).

Marion Hart's book also lists the entire text of Peter McPhail's obituary, from the Anderson Gazette (?).1,3

He Lewis was never married.1

There were no children of Peter2 McPhail and Permelia Anne Lewis.

2. Sebina2 McPhail (John1) was born on 8 Nov 1814 at Argyllshire, SCT, was the last child to be born to John and Marion McPhail before sailing to America.1 She married Mauldin Reeves Manning, son of George Manning and ALeathy Reeves, on 17 Feb 1833 at Pendleton, SC. She died on 17 Jul 1858 at Anderson, Anderson County, SC, at age 43 Her obituary appeared in the Southern Christian Advocate, 5 Aug, 1858 and is re-printed in Marion Hart's book.1 She was buried in Jul 1858 at Providence Methodist, Anderson County, SC.

She Mauldin and Sibbia had 4 children who died in the Civil War: George Preston Manning (died of disease at Petersburg, VA in March 1863), John M. Manning (died from wounds at Seven Pines, June 1862), Hezekiah W. Manning (killed in battle, June 1862, Richmond, VA), Peter McPhail Manning (Died of disease in Cobb County,GA in Nov, 1863).1 She also went by the name of Sibbia.

He ended military service in Mar 1863 at St. Petersburg, VA.

3. Amanda Jane2 McPhail (John1) married John James Findlay. She was born on 2 Jun 1824 at Iva, Anderson County, SC.1 She died on 12 Jul 1905 at Iva, Anderson County, SC, at age 81. She was buried in Jul 1905 at Varennes Presbyterian Church, Iva, Anderson County, SC.

4. James Wentworth2 McPhail (John1) married Nancy Hamilton, daughter of Luke Hamilton Jr. and Rosannah Hall. He was born on 24 Feb 1828 at Iva, Anderson County, SC. He died on 24 Jul 1895 at Iva, Anderson County, SC, at age 67. He was buried in Jul 1895 at Varennes Presbyterian Church, Iva, Anderson County, SC.

Generation Three

5. John Westley3 McPhail (Peter2, John1) was born on 11 Jan 1848 at Anderson County, SC.1 He married Margaret Richardson on 16 Nov 1875 at Anderson County, SC.1 He died on 20 Feb 1899 at Sandy Springs, SC, at age 51.

He From Marion Hart's book (), the couple died within 100 days of each other. Also, the book has the text of John's obituary, which indicated he was a soldier in the Confederacy in the closing days of the war with the 16 year old boys.1

6. Mary Tallulah3 McPhail (Peter2, John1)3 was born on 23 Aug 1849.1 She married Berry Martin, son of Jesse Martin and Jane Owen, on 18 Feb 1869 at Anderson County, SC.1,3 She died on 10 Mar 1906 at age 56.

She Mary Martin died with pneumonia. They were married by Rev George F. Round.

7. Charles McGilvary3 McPhail (Peter2, John1) was born on 26 Apr 1852 at Anderson County, SC. He married Mary E. Turner, daughter of J.C.C. Turner, on 1 Jan 1879 at Greenville, SC.1

He MArried at the residence of Mary Turner's father, by the Rev A. Coke Smith.

8. Donald Bellinger3 McPhail (Peter2, John1) was born on 25 Apr 1854 at Anderson County, SC.1 He married Martha Louise 'Lou Bell' Welborn on 18 Dec 1879.1 He died on 14 May 1925 at age 71.

He Donald B. died with diabetes.

9. Augustus Walker3 McPhail (Peter2, John1) married Frances Elizabeth Reeves. He was buried at Silverbrook Cemetery, Anderson, Anderson County, SC. He was born on 16 Apr 1856 at Anderson County, SC.1 He died on 7 Jul 1898 at age 42.

He Augustus died with typhoid fever.

10. James Capers3 McPhail (James2, John1) was born on 6 Dec 1865 at Anderson, Anderson County, SC. He married Louise Henderson Anderson, daughter of Robert Quinton Anderson and Frances Louisa Smith, on 25 Apr 1906. He died on 19 Nov 1918 at Iva, Anderson County, SC, at age 52. He was buried in Nov 1918 at Varennes Presbyterian Church, Iva, Anderson County, SC.

He was named for General Capers of Civil War. He also went by the name of Cape.
